“So, Garet and I met our first year of college together in English. As soon as he walked in I knew that it would be a hard class to focus in and I was SO right! One day in class he told me to come sit next to him and the rest is history. I knew that he wanted to join the military but I didn’t want to  accept it because I’ve had horrible experiences with family members in the military.

When he told me he was actually joining, my heart dropped. Not because I knew I wouldn’t see him for long periods of time but because I had seen first hand how people are affected by joining. After he told me, it was probably the worst week I’ve gone through. I cried and cried and cried while he studied his butt off for his ASVAB. When he was ready to go take it, something changed in me. Minutes before he left, I had NEVER seen him that happy before and I truly realized how much he meant to me when I saw him that happy. I knew at that moment that I would support him and stand by him no matter what. Through deployments, boot camp, school, and all other challenges life would throw at us. He’s happy and when you love someone thier happiness is also yours.

Since he’s joined, I’ve had so much fun talking to other Navy girlfriends/ wives including my best friend, even though her husband is in the Air Force. She left everybody she loved to move to Japan to be with him and I’ve never admired someone more.  The strength it takes to do that is not found in everyone and I’ve realized you HAVE to be strong to be with someone in the military but it is absolutely worth it.

Garet is the most amazing, kind-hearted person I know and the fact that I’m lucky enough to call him mine is beyond me. I grow to love him more and more each day with all of our inside jokes and amazing time spent together. I can’t wait to see what the Navy has in store for him because he is so passionate and excited for his future and seeing that drive in him makes me work hard towards my goal too, which is to finish college and start teaching kindergarten! I know that it’s not going to be easy and it’ll require a lot of work but I’m 100% in this because Garet is my best friend and I wouldn’t trade him for the world. I’m so excited to see what the future has in store for us.”
