Eight Reasons Why I Love Being In A Long Distance Relationship

Updated: Jan 20, 2021

When I first got into an LDR, I looked at all the downfalls. But over the past year of being a Navy girlfriend, I have come to find many reasons why I actually like this kind of lifestyle. Now, I’m not saying I want this kind of relationship forever because…well…no. I couldn’t do this forever. But there are some bright sides to this type of love.

1. I don’t have to look good if I don’t want to.

My clothes aren’t ironed? Eh, no worries. My hair isn’t properly curled? Screw it. My workout clothes don’t match? Don’t care. If I don’t want to look cute, I don’t have to. I have no one to impress and I’m not looking to attract attention. Oh man, forgot to shower last night? No worries, throw that mess up into a bun. Messy hair, don’t care is now my life motto.

2. I don’t have to shave if I don’t want to

Confession: I HATE shaving my legs. They get bumpy and irritated no matter how fancy my razor is and it’s a pain in my ass anyway. But since my boyfriend is 1,000 miles away it doesn’t matter! The only thing feeling up on my hairy legs is my dog when he wants to be pet. It’s especially great in winter. Just throw some sweats on and you’re good to go.

3. I have a lot of time to work on myself.

I think this is important especially at my age. I have a lot more time to pick up extra shifts at work, do homework or hit the gym. Believe me, I’d rather have my boyfriend here and fit him into my schedule but since I can’t, it is nice to have the extra time to build myself and my career.

4. You get to travel…a lot.

I now have an excuse to pack my bags and travel. And the best part is that you get to re-visit some of your favorite places so much to where they become like a second home. How many times have you been to Charleston? Probably not as many times as I have…

5. I have an excuse to be crafty!

Care packages are my favorite things. I love going shopping for them and getting creative with what goes in the package as well as the outside design. I would go as far as to say it is almost therapeutic in a way. The Sundays that I spend locked away in my room creating a care package are usually my favorite kind of Sundays.

6. Distance Makes The Heart Grow Fonder.

Whoever created this saying is a genius. I feel like because my SO and I are so far away from each other, we love harder because we have to make up for the distance. You have to make an effort to be in this kind of relationship and that makes it strong.

7. You Get Mail!

Being 22 with not a lot to my name, I hardly ever get mail unless it’s my bank statement. But now every once in a while I get a package or a card from Taylor which is enough to make my entire day. Definitely one of my favorite parts of this whole thing.

8. The Homecomings.

I have been trying to craft a way to explain the feelings I have whenever I see Taylor walk out of the gate of the airplane and I have yet to succeed. It is something like I have never felt before. The nervousness, the happiness, all the excitement. It’s like a rush. The moment that makes all the waiting and distance 100% worth it. It’s by far my favorite part of being in a military relationship.
